PREVIEW! Hellfest - Clisson, France

April 30, 2019

HELLFEST 2019 is just under two months away and this year looks like being the best ever. The infamous festival which is perhaps the Premier one for all things rock and metal in Europe has established itself as the place to be on the weekend of June 21st and the line up of bands is simply mouthwatering.

There is of course a slew of stages and Hellfest remains unique with two of the main stages side by side for a double dose of music to bleed your ears too and head-banging that you won’t forget in a hurry. Manowar will be headlining on Friday night- Man-O-Fucking-War ladies and gentlemen. Formed in 1980, the band are celebrating 40 years together and come to France with original singer Eric Adams and bassist Joey De Maio it will be a night to remember for ‘metal warrriors’ everywhere.

Dropkick Murphys will open before Manowar on the main stage and this band have a huge following over a 20 year period. The glorious Dream Theater are also at Hellfest on Friday and Godsmack will perform on the main stage also. That is, when you think of it more than enough to keep any metal fan happy on a Friday night, however that is just the tip of the iceberg. You will have the chance to catch over 50 more bands performing.

Try and catch French band Dagoba- does the name sound familiar to any Star Wars fans? It should do and the band also use the classic Emperor’s theme during their gig- don’t miss them! Canadians Sum 41 will be sure to whip up a frenzy, and there are some veterans rockers out there too in the form of the excellent King Diamond and Diamond Head. And did we not mention Carcass?  The boys from Liverpool are not to be missed.

Saturday will be headlined by the one and only KISS, in what could well be their final shows in Europe. You haven’t lived until you’ve witnessed a KISS show the band are full of energy and will be perfect head liners one suspects. It’s an 80s rock theme on Saturday because preceding the band- and this is where we get really spoiled are British rockers Def Leppard who are also worthy of headline status. Iconic 80s rockers Whitesnake will also be churning out their hits earlier in the day. On the other stage it is time for the legendary Billy Gibbons and the one and only ZZ Top. The band have some seriously brilliant tunes from their extensive back catalogue and should be checked out. Within Temptation will be on the same stage and the kooky and lovable Eagles of Death Metal will be making a welcome return to France. Other bands not to miss on Saturday will be the iconic Sisters of Mercy, Cradle of Filth, Skindred and Bloodbath. Gosh! What a fantastic line up!

The final day of the festival is like a who’s who of rock and metal music- wait? You thought you already had that, well you ain’t seen nothing yet. Headlining is the mighty Tool, and we should finally hear some new tracks from Maynard James Keenan beautiful band. The legendary Lynyrd Skynard will also be on the main stage and that means hearing ‘Free Bird’! Slash from Guns N’Roses will also be on stage with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. The legendary guitarist is like a fine wine and just gets better with age, he will blow you away, and maybe we can expect to hear some classic GN’R tunes as well.

Stone Temple Pilots are back and will be welcomed warmly. They have a new singer in Jeff Gutt and have been getting rave reviews, the biggest cheers will be reserved for any material played from ‘Core’ or ‘Purple’. The totally fantastic Clutch will also be playing the main stage- this is a band that can headline their own tours and sell them out to 5,000 plus people, so having them also on this electric bill will be something akin to being spoiled.

On the other stage the likes of Testament, Anthrax and Lamb of God will wake you up from any hangovers you may have over what promises to be a fantastic moment in your life here in Clisson, France. But you want more- and Hellfest will give you more. How about…. Slayer’s final ever show in France! Yes the legendary four piece who put brutal into thrash will be appearing as they wind down their extensive world tour. Watch out for that circle pit during Raining Blood. It will be a memory to cherish.

There are a whole host of death metal bands to check out too, some up and coming and some you will know such as Deicide and Cannibal Corpse and Pantera front man Phillip Anselmo will also be bringing his latest band And the Illegals to Hellfest in what should be a brutal and often loud gig.

Whew! What a line up, put that together with the fact that Hellfest is most probably the friendliest place you could be on Planet Earth between June 21st-23rd and you have the complete package there.
