Its just another summers evening in London bringing the best in live music from across the world. That’s the great thing about the city, from a live music scene perspective, there is always something for someone and on July 7th, that something will come in the form of Sludgy, experimental metallers and almost super group SUMAC who boast previous members of Isis, Botch, Old Man Gloom and Russian Circles just to name a few. In addition, there is a healthy portion of support for the show that comes in the form of the man, the myth, the legend that is JK Flesh, (You may know him as Justin Broadrick) as well as the mighty Mamiffer (who also have ties to Sumac themselves) and Janne Westerlund, who will be opening the nights proceedings.
Sumac formed back in 2014 however did not release their debut album ‘The Deal’ until 2015 which was mostly well received and garnered largely positive reviews by fans and critics alike with some also describing the effort as ‘landing somewhere in between the music of Isis and Old Man Gloom" demonstrating "sludgy heaviness," "nonlinear song structure" and "no shortage of magnificent crescendos."
The band release a follow up to their debut this year with ‘What One Becomes’. In a press release the band offered an explanation, in part, to the theme of the album guitarist Aaron Turner stated: "Much of it has to do with questioning fabricated structures of identity and what it means when those structures are destabilized by contact with the outside. That has been a unnerving process to undergo, but also fruitful in terms of discovering the path to individuation and realized connection with the self. Another facet of experience I'm working to convey is about living with the sustained presence of anxiety, and avoiding reliance on musical devices of cathartic release to provide escape from this condition.
As previously mentioned, also on the lineup is JK Flesh of Godflesh and Jesu fame. JK Flesh see’s Justin Broadrick move away from those bands and into more of a solo project. With already 4 albums behind him, expect a mix of tracks including some off the latest album ‘Rise Above’
Although this show will be a night of some ridiculously good music, and whilst we at The Revival are looking forward to all of the bands, there is one in particular we are excited for the most. several albums in, splits and collaborations through various record labels across almost a decade, Mamiffer will bring their epic ambient masterpieces to the Underworld to mesmerize everyone in attendance and will force Aaron Turner to perform double duty prior to his headline set with Sumac.
